(learn more here). We want to ensure all jewelry pieces are kept safe and kept in tip-top condition while traveling, which is why we are sharing our best tips for keeping your jewelry and other valuables safe while enjoying a tropical getaway. Check them out!
#1. Take photos of your jewelry before the vacation– We strongly recommend taking pictures of all jewelry pieces that will be traveling with you. This is a proactive thing to do. In the (unfortunate) event something may happen to a piece of your jewelry, you’ll have an exact depiction to reference.
#2. Invest in a jewelry travel case – Storing jewelry in a hard-sided jewelry case is the best way for it to travel. We recommend keeping this case in a carry-on bag while traveling so it remains with you at all times. Cramming jewelry into your luggage without proper storage could potentially cause necklaces to tangle or break, or prongs/gemstones to be damaged.
3. Use the safe in the room or lock your luggage – When you are not wearing your jewelry, it should be stored in a locked safe or in your luggage with a lock. This mitigates any possible attractions to hotel room guests + creates a safe and consistent place for you to put your when it is not being worn.
4. Remove jewelry before swimming– Never swim with jewelry pieces on. The chemicals in pool/hot tub water, and the salt in the ocean, will cause corrosion and damage to fine jewelry. In addition, fingers tend to shrink in cold water, which means your ring can slip off without even realizing it. We recommend leaving jewelry in the room!
5. Bring a tiny plastic container with you – We recommend keeping a small-sized plastic container on you at all times. That way, you have a safe place to put your jewelry in the event you take an unexpected adventure that you don’t want your jewelry to go on. They make specific products meant for this purpose, but a contact lens case, pill case, or small kitchen tupperware container does the job.
6. Avoid putting on lotions or perfumes while wearing jewelry – Keep your jewelry away from sunscreens, lotions, and perfumes. Chemicals within these products can interact with jewelry and cause oxidation or discoloration. In addition, residue from these products will build up on jewelry pieces, hindering their luster and brilliance. We recommend putting these products on, letting them set, and then putting jewelry on.
7. Conceal pieces if you feel necessary – Wearing expensive pieces can feel unsettling if you're in an unknown area. If you start to feel uncomfortable, take steps to conceal your jewelry from strangers such as turning the gemstone on your ring inward toward your palm, or tucking necklaces in your shirt.
We hope these easy tips will help make traveling even more enjoyable. Do you have any additional tips you can share that can make traveling with valuables easier?
